In honour of Black History Month, we Celebrate the Rockers United Sports Club’s 50 Incredible Years of Serving Ottawa’s Black Community.

The Rockers United Sports Club was formed by a group of College Students who migrated from the Caribbean to Canada in 1974 to study at Algonquin College. They wanted to continue playing soccer (football) as they did in their homeland. However, it was challenging for them to join other established soccer clubs in the Ottawa area because they were primarily culturally-based clubs (i.e. Portuguese, Italian, German, etc.).

As a result, for the first 26 years, the Rockers Sports Club was created to secure a place for Caribbean students as well as any member of the Ottawa Black Community. For the past 24 years, the Rockers United Sports Club has become an inclusive club to Canadians and new immigrants to Canada within the Ottawa Community.

Each Rockers game attracts a host of fans from a wide cross-section of the Ottawa community, and with this overwhelming community support, the Rockers United Sports Club proudly celebrates its 50th year as an Ottawa sports institution.

In honour of Black History Month, and the 50th Anniversary of the Rockers Sports Club, we celebrate this incredible achievement.
